Cattle History

We initially fell in love with Dexter cattle in the summer of 2000 when we visited a beautiful farm in Northern Maryland where these amazing cattle roamed.  They didn't seem to care at all that strangers were in their pastures and even came to visit.   A wonderfully sweet young bull couldn't get enough attention from these new people on his territory.  After feeding these short legged cattle apples and admiring how intelligent they were, we were hooked.  We spent much of the afternoon talking with Judy, the farm owner, about how and what these cattle were.

To date, winter 2006, we have purchased 1 bull, the amazing bull mentioned earlier, Windridge Nollaig, 7 heifers and hope to add a few more to the mix within the next year.

Irish Dexter cattle are a true tri purpose breed that is an amazingly well kept secret.  To date, we have only run into a few cattlemen that have even heard of this breed, but we are working hard to change that.  Dexters have amazing beef straight out of the pasture, give enough milk to supply their calves as well as a family, and are docile enough for our grandson of less than a year to play with.

1. Very hardy breed that handle climate changes with more ease that many commercial breeds.

2. Do not need to be grain finished before processing, saving time and money.

3. More efficient on the land allowing more cattle on less land.

4. Amazing protectors of their young and the younger calves in the herd.

5. True Oxen.

6. Smaller, more flavorful cuts of meat.

7. Better for the environment

8. Ease of handling, without the constant work.

9. Calving ease, problem births at a bare minimum.

10. Amazing maternal instincts, even in 1st time heifers.

11. Great tasting milk and milk products, considered liquid gold.
