The Black and White Truth - Dexter and White Cattle

Natural Beef with Old Breeds

Raising Dexters and British Whites have many advantages. These breeds of cattle came from less than perfect lands, including living literally in the wild for many, many years. These breeds, greatly due to their history; are more sound cattle. They don’t need the most pristine of pastures to grow and even thrive. Our cattle breeds are known to have excellent maternal and paternal instincts. I have watched over time that our cattle have babysitters and lookouts. Even our bulls get involved in the babysitting rotation. Each one is given a day, even though I don’t know how they remember whose turn it is, to basically just keep an eye out on the area.

There are many amazing qualities that these breeds bring to the table, no pun intended. Now you may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with natural beef. Simply put, the bottom dollar.

Having a breed of cattle that doesn’t need the added attention and worry in birthing, finding and maintaining the best of pastures, temperature highs and lows; it just makes sense even in the checkbook. The list goes on and on.

Natural beef is getting to be a big name, but the land that is required to keep and raise natural beef with many commercial breeds is much greater than these breeds of cattle. Allowing more animals per pasture is also a great economical plus.

Marketing Rare Cattle Breeds
Marketing our cattle has been interesting to say the least. Both breeds of cattle are rare, thus practically unknown to the regular farmer or family. Knowing about your breed is essential to clients. We continue to enjoy the time spent talking about our girls and boys to anyone that asks.

I have found that passing up an opportunity to talk about your cattle can be a loss for you as the breeder, and a loss for the breed.

I recently had a gentleman call asking about our buffalo calves, which had just been sold. I explained to him that keeping too many bulls on our farm wasn’t an option, so we had to let Sampson and Delilah, our wonderful buffalo calves go. I had told him we also raise rare cattle. He later asked about what else we did breed, so I took the time to let him know a little about our Dexters and Whites.

I also took the time to point him in the right direction as to where he could find buffalo calves. He informed me that he would keep an eye on our farm as to what we had for sale and to expect to hear back from him. I truly feel that if you take the time to give people real customer service that it willpay off. I have found this to be true with our chinchillas time and time again. We have sold several animals later down the line either to new clients or return clients because we took time with each of them. We encourage our clients to keep in touch, or at least keep our information should they ever need us in the future. I will add that in doing so, many of our clients have come from referrals.
